Wicker Emporium is a privately owned Canadian retailer of home furnishings and furniture. Established in 1972 by its current president and CEO Madan Kapahi, Wicker Emporium quickly grew from its flagship Halifax location to a chain of stores throughout Atlantic Provinces and now in Ontario.
Wicker Emporium offers a vast selection of quality products and interior design solutions.
Starting small in Halifax
Originally from India, Mr. Kapahi arrived in Canada in 1967 to practice law. After settling with his family in their new home in Halifax, he found himself looking for traditional wicker furniture—a comfortable and appealing reminder of home.
He soon realized that what he was looking for couldn’t be found locally. Jumping to the challenge, he opened his first store in Halifax’s Scotia Square Mall. During regular trips to Europe and Asia, he sourced local markets and vendors for unique, stylish wicker furniture and basketry. The business quickly grew into more.
Expansion to new markets and new offerings
Since the launch of that first store, Wicker Emporium has grown into a successful family operation, allowing the Kapahis the opportunity to stay in touch with their families and culture while making Canada their new home.
Wicker Emporium may have started as wicker, but now encompasses much more. In addition to quality wicker, the company’s product line has expanded to include:
- solid wood furniture
- wrought iron
- upholstered accent furniture
- mirrors and wall art
- storage solutions and basketware
- home textiles
- floor and window coverings
- outdoor furniture and accessories
- accessories and home decor items
A style for every budget
“ Our stores are designed with a boutique concept. There are a wide variety of options and price points. Students on limited budgets come to furnish their dorms and first apartments with inexpensive basics. We also have durable, solid wood pieces at a higher price point that last for many years. Wicker Emporium offers products in a variety of materials and styles to suit different tastes and budgets.”
Over forty years since its initial establishment, Wicker Emporium remains a family-owned business. Now with twenty-three stores throughout the Atlantic Provinces and Ontario, its head office and distribution centre is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The driving force behind the company remains the same: to allow everyone to express their inner designer with unique finds from around the world.
“ Working with Wicker Emporium is an adventure. Every day is different, with new things to learn and new challenges to overcome. I work with an amazing and talented group of people and am fortunate enough to be able to travel all over the world to source great products at the best possible prices. My travels have taken me to some wonderful parts of the world and allowed me to meet different people from many countries. Many of our suppliers have become like family to us. I am grateful for the opportunity which I have been given—to participate in building a great company.”

“ I have always loved handmade, handcrafted, beautiful products. I have always appreciated art and creativity. Working for Wicker inspires me to come up with new ideas and designs, and to create unforgettable impressions on people. My job as a marketing director and buyer helps me do all of this. My dream and goal is to stop and smell the roses, enjoying every moment of being a part of this company. At the same time I aspire to make Wicker Emporium a household name.”
Priyanka Kapahi, Marketing Director
“ I opened my first Wicker Emporium store in 1972 to make my living and to support my family. In time, to my delight, it turned into an adventure and a passion—to explore the world, seeking products which were rare and new to the Canadian market. It has been very personally rewarding to appreciate creative skills and the beauty of products of our planet and to experience diverse cultures. It also gave me a chance to share friendships and business relationships with people all over of the world. I am very thankful to millions of our customers, to my core team, to store sales teams, and to our overseas suppliers, who have given me a rare opportunity to become a citizen of our small world. Today, still it is as inspiring and exciting to be involved in the business to share innovative ideas and skills of people as it was when I opened my first Wicker Emporium store forty years ago.”
