Spring has finally arrived, soon to be followed by summer! At this time of year everyone is preparing to move outside to enjoy the months of warm weather. Over the years we have greatly changed our way of looking at our outdoor spaces. Outdoor living spaces are an extension of your home, where you can expand your living and entertaining area with the correct furnishings. By using your outdoor space you are adding more living space to your home, and with the right transition, will make your home seem larger.
We are even dividing the outdoor space into rooms with different functions, much like indoors. It is always nice to continue the theme of your indoor style of décor outside for a harmonious flow. Keeping the colour palette similar will create a seamless transition. Keep in mind the style of your home’s exterior when making your furniture purchases and try to complement it.
The first thing to consider is how you would like to use your space.
- Will you be relaxing, entertaining or gardening?
- Do you have a pool or hot tub?
- Will you be entertaining a lot, thus requiring a good table & chairs?
- What exposure do you have? Is there a lot of sun in your outdoor space that will require overhead protection like a sun shade, pergola or umbrella?
- Do you require a portion of the space to be set up for your children to play?
- Will you be lounging and reading?
These are all the different questions to think about prior to setting up your outdoor space and purchasing what you need. Make sure to take measurements of the individual areas to be sure what you like will actually fit in your space. It should be planned just as you would if you were furnishing an indoor space.
There are so many options available on the market today from very moderate pricing to very high end. We can select everything from dining furniture, living room style banquets and settees, chairs with ottomans, coffee and end tables, outdoor lamps and outdoor kitchens. With the addition of outdoor fireplaces and patio heaters we can extend the time we are able to enjoy our outdoor rooms. Make sure the fabric on the cushions is weather-proof so you don't have to worry about leaving them outside. Gone are the days when a couple of discoloured plastic chairs and the small charcoal barbecue sufficed. We have evolved! We want to relax in style!
Don’t forget accessories and lighting. This is where the addition of punches of colour can be fun. Look at toss cushions, outdoor area rugs to delineate a particular area, or dishware that is so great it can be used indoors if you choose. No more paper plates! The lighting available is bountiful and with so many eco-forwards solar lanterns available, why not add some ambience to your garden?
There is no excuse to not have a fabulous outdoor space. Have fun!
