Decorating with White

Decorating with White

Decorating with a monochromatic white colour scheme is not as easy as you would assume. In order to be successful when working with a white-on-white scheme you must put as much thought into your space and selections as you would when working with other colour schemes.

White has to be done correctly or it can be a disaster. When approached correctly you can create an elegant look. Keep in mind that choosing white is not the safe or easy way out of making a colour choice. Using a variety of whites in one space can be subtle but complex and quite beautiful if done with expertise.

There are so many different whites that I do not think it can ever be boring. If you do make the decision to go white, it is important to consider that whites contain many undertones and come in many variations as well as warm and cool tones. There are also tinted whites, complex whites, etc. You can choose warm whites or cool whites depending on the space, and the exposure received in it.

As an Interior Decorator I love colour but can also appreciate the value of white. White is very versatile. Decorating in a white-on-white scheme allows you to add colour if, and when, you desire without making major changes. White can create an ethereal feeling in a space or a very modern and slick look with everything in between.

A monochromatic white-on-white scheme can create an airy, calm and restful feeling, which is great for a bedroom. It can be light and airy, which opens up small spaces giving the sense of a more spacious room. When used in kitchens and bathrooms it gives the feeling of cleanliness and freshness. One of the most popular kitchen décor styles is using almost all white throughout the space with subtle highlights of other colours. White in a bathroom generates a ‘spa’ or ‘Zen’ feeling.

A very important factor to an all-white (monochromatic) space is having texture. Having a variety of different textures in the room will add interest and keep it from looking flat and boring. Try different finishes as well--shiny, matte, linen, fur, leather, silk, wood, metal, etc. Mix different whites that coordinate.
