Creating the Cottage Look at Wicker Emporium
Finally, the sun is making an appearance and just in the nick of time. Three days in a hammock is just what I need after a hectic five months of home staging and styling. Not yet a cottage owner, we have a fave one we rent in Spanish Ship Bay, Nova Scotia; a pristine setting with beautiful views. No cell, email or city noise, just a water view, a babbling brook and tranquility. I love the relaxed décor of cottage life. Throw the flip flops off and kick back as I share my ideas for my perfect cottage. Weathered woods, rustic painted pieces, faded shades of blue and seaside elements. My starting point:
The cottage look can be achieved with one-stop shopping at Wicker Emporium. The "Mahone Bay" and “Halifax” collections have several beautiful pieces, perfect for relaxed living where you can put your feet up worry-free and chill. Painted furniture is quintessential cottage style because it is nostalgic, just like old cottages. Mix and match for a curated look that has been gathered over time. Second hand finds mixed with a few new elements makes for a more interesting interior.
A spot for cool drinks, a summer novel or an extra surface to set up a card game. Wicker Emporium has a few options, one of my picks being the distressed look painted metal tray stand.
You can never have enough seating areas in a cottage. I love the look of weathered, rustic wicker and the “Rothsay” wing chair fits the bill. Add some plump pillows, sink back and close your eyes. Use industrial-looking metal side chairs in any room; at the side of a bed as a nightstand with an angled reading lamp, in a bathroom to hold a stack of towels or in the kitchen for those family gatherings...so versatile.
Good reading lamps, lanterns for outdoor dining and candles. I love the look of the Driftwood table lamp. The jute shade adds a textured element and blends with any décor colours. Add some sparkle with galvanized or shiny nickel. A rope table and floor lamp adds a nautical look when space is at a premium.
Family-friendly, natural and durable, jute or cotton rugs are stylish and practical. Everything from subdued, calming neutral tones with texture to happy, bright splashes of colour are available at Wicker Emporium. I am partial to the Gold Herringbone Jute, the Sea-Surf Printed Cotton Chindi and the Rossi indoor/outdoor kilm (such fabulous colour).
No cottage is complete without personal touches of accessories and collections. I gravitate towards anything ‘beachy’ Shells, driftwood, birds, fish, boats…..the sea is in my blood, having lived with the ocean in view on both sides of the Atlantic.
Gotta go, my hammock and wine awaits :)
