Outdoor Room Inspiration
Earlier this week I enjoyed a delightful walk with the dogs along the Shubenacadie Canal and I’m still in awe of the amazing colours and textures along the trail. Fresh lime-green new leaves against the clearest blue sky, the blue-gray swirls of running water against the earthen colours of rocks and driftwood along the water’s edge, and the sparkle of sunshine over everything made for a spectacular and uplifting sight. It’s no wonder we often take our colour palettes from nature.
I visited Granville Island, Vancouver last year and experienced how much they enjoy their outside spaces. Even tiny condos sport large, well-appointed decks and it seems that everyone makes use of the walking paths. Outdoor living space has been on the rise in Canada for several years now. Here in Halifax we usually have about five months of warm weather to enjoy outdoors and more and more of us are taking better advantage of it with well-planned outdoor rooms. New styles of exterior furniture have cropped up which are actually comfortable to relax on, fabrics are being produced with better resistance to fading and moisture, and beautiful colours are available whether you prefer the neutral or bright colours of nature.
How do you create your own outdoor room to love? Determine first how you want to use the space. Will it be a place to relax, to play, to cook and to eat? How many people will be using the space? Do you need to add shade? Choose the primary furniture based on the answers to these questions. Wicker Emporium is one of my go-to places for interesting outdoor pieces. Like this Santa Barbara Sectional, ideal for a comfy conversational area. These warm neutral tones bring to mind beach colours, are an excellent complement to most house colours and can easily be combined with bold, bright accessories. Neutral-coloured furniture is a great back drop for the stronger colours of a surrounding garden.
Next, accessorize the space with functionality and enjoyment in mind; a surface to place your cool drink on, a rug to cozy and define the area, cushions for comfort and potted flowers to add in your colours of choice, and even garden art hung on the house exterior or a fence, hung from overhead branches or attached to a pole which is planted in the ground. You are limited only by your imagination. Consider Wicker Emporium’s Santa Barbara Glass Top Coffee Table and Grey Coral Oval Planter with fun cushions the color of the sky.
These Antique Indoor/Outdoor Candle Lanterns and a flowering garden may be just the thing to complete your outdoor space. Following the lead of nature is a recipe for success!
Enjoy your outdoor space and all the wonder of nature.
