Making Room to Grow: Designing Cool Kid Spaces
As our children grow they need a kid friendly space that they can call their own and serve their needs as activities change. Colour, texture and durability are all things to consider when planning a kid focused space. That being said, you don't have to go for the obvious, the latest cartoon character or "Princess" of the moment themed furnishings. Investing in good quality pieces that will accommodate the needs of a 2 or 20 year old will save you dollars in the long run and they will flee the nest with some stylish pieces that will make them feel at home.
Start with the large items first. Storage is always one thing kids never seem to have enough of. A low dresser which is easily accessible for younger ones will be a versatile item that will serve them well. The Mahone Bay three drawer storage unit with baskets can double as toy or clothing storage and will look at home in a living or family room down the line.
For a more colourful look I love the painted metal pieces. Functional and cool, they look even better with some wear and tear. The six drawer distressed look storage unit has numbered drawers, a good way for younger ones to remember what goes where. This piece would make a great bedside piece too, paired with our red nautical wooden lamp.
Seating for a desk or for friends to hang out is always a good addition and you can't go wrong with the classic and iconic Industrial stacking chair. The colour choices in these are fabulous and another piece that any teen or adult would love to have.
The Lunenburg console table is compact if space is limited. It can serve as a small desk or a vanity and would be adorable with a mirror above it for "dress up" fun. Another item that can be passed on when it's time to cut the apron strings.
Let's soften things up. Drapes and pillows in bright colours will add personality. A great solution if you don't want to give in to hot pink or lime green walls. Compromise is good right? Wicker Emporium has a wide selection of drapes in an array of colours and patterns that won't break the bank. Canvas panels work with any room and blackouts are a good idea for for those long summer evenings and blustery cold nights.
Lets not forget to accessorize. The ever-changing selection at Wicker Emporium means you will always find something that suits the interests or your little Miss or Mr. From wooden animals to picture frames to wall hooks and treasure boxes, to hide all those little trinkets that are so special.
We love to see pictures of your spaces, so send us an image of your kid-friendly rooms decorated with any Wicker Emporium items.
